Kingdom Of Dreams

When you are in Delhi NCR, one place you absolutely have to visit is the Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon. The Culture Galli (see pics below) is an absolutely cultural explosion - so much wonderful beauty and variety of India crammed in that tiny space, you will be left gasping. Easily worth spending a couple of hours, it also allow you to partake in some amazing Indian cuisine and shopping.

Right next door is an amazing theatre where you can enjoy some unbelievable live musicals - we enjoyed a stunning display of musical kung fu, stretching 1.5 hours, a treat to the senses, colors, sounds and actions that just seem so unreal, so beautiful (remember Life of Pi?). At 1400/1900 per ticket, it does sound very expensive, but trust me, it is so worth it!

The inside of the theatre; we weren't allowed to shoot once the show started

Do check it out!

Haldiram's

Had an amazing feast at Haldiram's the first night in Gurgaon - cheap, fulling, and absolutely sinfully delicious. Have a look...

Cinnamon Stays in Gurgaon!

While in Gurgaon, we stayed at the beautiful Cinnamon Stays B&B in Gurgaon (look up http://www.cinnamonstays.in/) - an amazing experience that made us feel right at home, and made departure such a difficult thing to do! Run by Manish, an artist and ex-adman, and Shilpi, an HR professional, Cinnamon Stays invites you right into their home as family, not as guests. Rashmi, their Woman Friday, is an amazing housekeeper and facilitator, ensuring your every need is taken care of - from keeping the heater on before you reach home, to serving the most amazing breakfast and tea, nothing is left to chance. The home is full of amazing artifacts, most of them created by Manish himself, in a tiny art studio he maintains in the house.

And at the price of 2500 per room, it is an absolute steal!

Here are some pics showing the beautiful, walled neighbourhood, and our home. Red brick mansions, cars in the driveway, children playing hockey, winter-struck trees, manicured lawns in front of the homes, french windows for every room opening into cute gardens - truly an amazing place that will make you come back again, and again.

Gurgaon, A Good Gaon!

Just back from a 3 day trip to Gurgaon (for the Internet Retail Expo 2013)... and must say, I have kinda grown fond of it (maybe due to our amazing hosts, more on them later!).

For a first time visitor, the place looks like a dusty desert, featureless and boring.. stretching for miles in every direction, each block exactly the same as the next. It's dusty, there're still pigs roaming around, electricity cables hang ugly from hurriedly installed poles, footpaths need serious attention, and harried Haryanvis are ready to pick up a fight at the slightest provocation.

But it's really a city in the making, construction at a fast pace, villages quickly transforming into huge malls, commercial complexes and swanky residential areas. The roads are broad, spread out, and represent most American cities - no friendly neighbourhood bhaiyya, no paanwaala, no hawkers. Take the exit, pull over into a mall's parking lot, and get your job done. We ran into cops with breathanalyzers and interceptor vehicles. The Metro rails zoomed past steel and glass edifices, with huge neon lights. Toll stations with dozens of gates struggled to cope with the thousands of vehicles taking weekend revellers to the malls, shopping plazas and theatres.

The weather was awesome, 7 degrees at night, with fog and a chilly wind ensuring everyone carried woolens and business suits even in the late afternoons.

Give it a couple of years, and this city has the potential to be among the world's best.

Being Industry Ready - What Does It Take?

I had a small session for students of a management school today, on what it takes to be successful at your first job. Here's an edited version of the presentation I used. I know the slides are minimalistic, but I hope you will find them interesting...
