The tenth novel in the Bourne series, and the seventh to be written by Eric Van Lustbader, The Bourne Imperative will be a disappointment for fans of Robert Ludlum and Jason Bourne. While Lustbader did a pretty good job carrying on the Bourne franchise for a long time, much longer than Ludlum himself did, this is a bummer.
Too many characters and sub-plots, with Bourne relegated to being just one of the many characters floundering around in the maze, unnecessary erotica, and a story that just seems to go nowhere, the book simply refuses to grab your attention. Unlike the high ocatane action Jason is known for, across exotic countries and locations, The Imperative evokes none of that imagery.
For someone who cannot stop devouring a Ludlum novel, the Imperative has taken almost a month of painstaking reading, a couple dozen pages at a time, to get through...
Disappointing.
